Fuel gauge is not working and I'm trying to diagnose the problem

more than likely the sending unit>>> float/arm/switch is bad> no fuse for the sender..got two tanks on the van? if you don't have the $$$$$ to fix it,just keep plenty of fuel in it and drive on,the fuel pump is still working or keep up with the MPG you get per tank full and use the odometer trip button!
The fuse box under the hood is on the left hand fender. There are fuses for the fuel pump, but none listed for the sending unit. Do yourself a favor and check all of your fuses. Inside and out. Also, to ensure your sending unit is working properly, resistors must be used to confirm appropriate operation of the fuel gauge at certain resistance. What I'm getting at is if all of your fuses are good you will need diagnostic testing to prove the faulty part, otherwise you'll be throwing parts at it until you hit the mark. Here is a list of certified shops in your area should you need the assistance. http://repairpal.com/ford-within-10-miles-of-coal-city-illinois-60416
