Does this vehicle operate well without catalitic converters ?

Shop that did computer reading and tech, doesn't do mufflers, ect….stated that O2 sensors indicate that the engine light for motor is on probably because of catalytic fouling. O2 1 and 2 are indicating the above information, experience of mechanic, stated to take it to a muffler shop. I recently could smell a strange odor not usually present when the P 71 is idling or has just been shut down. Not extra noises.
