Do I need a starter?

What is your question?

It intermittently won't start on the first time it just makes one clicking sound when I turn the key on, then after 3 or 4 tries it will start up and run just fine. I couldn't get it started the other day and called AAA to have it towed. The AAA driver got it started after manipulating the key/ignition and told me it was definitely my starter. I just want to make sure before I buy a new starter, as I am on a very limited income.

What makes this problem better or worse?

It seems to not start right away when it sits for a long time
