How to replace starter

The starter on your 1998 Ford Contour should be located on the lower front of the engine. Here are the basic removal and installation instructions: Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove air intake resonators. Remove starter motor upper mounting bolts. Raise and support the vehicle. Remove the cables from the starter terminals. Remove the two starter lower retaining bolts and remove the starter. To install: Place the starter into position and tighten the 2 lower retaining bolts to 15-20 ft. lbs. Place the starter cables onto the terminals and tighten the retaining nuts to 80-124 inch lbs. Lower the vehicle. Install and tighten the upper retaining bolt to 15-20 ft. lbs. Install the air intake resonators. Connect the negative battery cable.

It is at the bottom of the engine bolted directly to the trasmission, It's about 10 inches long cylinder in shape and has a few wires coming out of the back. It is not the thing bolted next to the battery that is something completely different
