i was told that it is a synthetic transmission fluid. i dont want to pay $35.00 a qt. at dealership if i ca find elsewhere

According to Mitchell1 shop data resource, your call calls for Mercon. But Mercon V is upgraded from Mercon and is also approved as a substitute for Mercon. According to Castrol, Mercon V has: "Enhanced friction durability provides superior transmission life and promotes smooth shifting." A transmission flush for this vehicle at our independent shop would cost about $130.
FYI: Ford made standard Mercon obsolete several years ago, opting to make the positive benefits of Mercon V available to most all Fords - backwards compatible. Certainly you can buy Mercon manufactured by others still, but I would elect to go with what the manufacturer suggests.
