wont start

my van is a automatic and it started grinding from the trans and then it down shifted from 4th to 2nd to 1st and then died and it wouldnt start i left it on the side of the road for a week and my battery just died completly and i then got it towed to my parents house and we put a new starter and battery in it and it still wont start can you please tell me whats wrong with it??
