The symbol for engine control unit malfunction comes on when car is started.

if you mean the check engine light or service engine soon light,then take it to Autozone and have them read the code/codes.have them print out the codes for you,it's free,then post code/codes here.that light does not just come on for no reason,the BRAIN has detected a fault somewhere.
