What is your question?
I heard the belt whining a couple weeks ago but needed to leave town on a long trip, crossed my fingers and made it there and back. Today it whined more just after starting and then popped the serpentine belt. At first I thought is was just power steering, so I turned around and headed the few miles home. Before I got home it started to overheat. Just as I was pulling over the airbag light then check engine light came on. The radiator leaked/sputterd but did not explode. I have tensioner, idler, and belt on order. Idler pulley was fried/in shreds and twisted. Belt was snaped, twisted, ground up, frayed, aged, and stuck in pulleys. AC, temp, alternator, and power steering were all fine before today. Went to see if I could crank it over to get it home and get nothing at all. Lights come on. No click or crank... just trying to prepare myself and my overtaxed budget for the next probable steps, or things I can fix/rule out while I wait a couple days for parts. Any insights much appreciate!
What makes this problem better or worse?
the correct engine size is 5.9L I believe, though not listed here as an option...
How long has your 1999 Dodge Ram 3500 Van had this problem?
just today, though I heard it sounding wrong a couple weeks ago

Driving your vehicle with a known real concern is a major risk with many possible consequences. Consider that your water pump also needs your belt to be driven, or you will not circulate coolant through your cooling system! If you are not circulating coolant and your engine continues to get hotter and hotter, there is no telling what damage may have occurred. However, before all that, remember your alternator would not be charging the battery either -- so perhaps start by checking and charging your battery and going from there.
REALLY ??
Gosh, yes. Thanks anyway.
First thing to try whenever a no crank condition exists is a *jump start* - regardless of assumptions that the battery “is fine”.. Especially since the ‘alternator’ hasn’t been operating - as stated in the other answer. The lights may very well turn on as usual - it takes MUCH MORE current for the starter to crank the engine ! Good luck!
Thank you! I am expecting the belt, tensioner, and idler pulley to arrive any day, at which point I will see how does. I appreciate the suggestion, and hope it is something as simple as that. :)
Not necessary to have the drive belt on engine to try a jump start for testing purposes.. However fully re-charging the battery using a battery charger would be the best option. From an ‘online’ point of view - a discharged battery is the only logical answer - otherwise *hands-on* evaluation is required. Again - GOOD LUCK!
Yes, that is all pretty obvious. The battery is one thing that is fine. Thanks anyway. :)
