I have a 1998 ram 2500 the speedometer doesn't work until the truck hits 25 mph and the abs and brake light are on I've been told by two different dodge mechanics, that it is my speed sensor, when I ask them how to replace it, I dont get a staight answer because they want to get paid , I am relatively mech incline and have toolsto perform the job, I just dont know where to find the sensor or how to replace it. please help, Im just a poor public servant and cant afford to pay the ridiculous shop prices

The Vehicle Speed sensor is located on top of the differential housing. it is held in with one bolt and takes about 15 minutes to change. Part #56028 187AC. Always have the dealership check and verify for the latest updated part number. REMOVAL: Raise vehicle on hoist. Remove brake line mounting nut and remove the brake line from the sensor stud. Remove mounting stud from the sensor and shield Rear Speed Sensor Mounting . Remove sensor and shield from differential housing. INSTALLATION: Connect harness to sensor. Be sure seal is securely in place between sensor and wiring connector. Install O-ring on sensor (if removed) Insert sensor in differential housing. Install sensor shield. Install the sensor mounting stud and tighten to 24 N·m (18 ft. lbs.). Install the brake line on the sensor stud and install the nut. Lower vehicle.
I also have a 1998 dodge ram 2500 and the same thing happened to me and all I had to do is replace the abs sensor that is located at the rear axle. It is not your speed sensor trust me it is way cheaper.
it could b the one on the back of ur tran or t case depending on if it's 4x4 or not but all u need is a 1 inch deep socket to do that
i also had this happen if it is the cummins engine change the crank shaft position sensor i know it sounds strange but i changed everything including the cluster and pcm still no change after moore detailed look at the wiring diagram it all runs through the crank sensor on the cummins hope this helps
I know this was a long time ago but, my speedo is bouncing on my 01 cummins 4x4 6 speed ive changed the sensor on rear axle and checked and cleaned the connection behind driverside front wheel and it tills jumps after 40 mph. do you think the crankshaft sensor will fi this also the abs unit will run non stop if the relay is in the fuse block tried several different relays think this is a different problem with the abs unit or tied into the speedo problem?
I have a 98 cummins that i think has the same problem but aint sure. The batteries dont charge when running and the tach is bobbing up and down or laying flat. ABS light is on. I checked all the grounds but that didn't do anything. please help
