what causes a malfunction in the transmission

First things first. Get the codes read for the cause of the "check engine" light. Post the codes here ( the actual number ie. P1234 etc.) then maybe we can be of some help.

you need to go to a shop to have the code checked. Roy

I agree with these guys it could be anything & instead of guessing just get the code(s) read
