Car would not shift out of park, replace part now when I shift into gear D is R?

Car got stuck in park because of small plastic piece in shifter. Replaced the part and now the car is not registering shifts correctly. I shift the car with no response until I get to D, and the car registers this as R, and is in reverse when I am at D, when I shift lower it does drop to neutral, but does not go into a forward gear. I just bought this car, and am now taking a very expensive daily bus commute, please help.
