My dodge journey check engine light is on and my temp..gauge is going to hot then cold

When i go across the highway my check engine light comes on. On my way back home my temperature gauge went to hot i had to pull over turn my truck off..for the rest of the day..i got in my truck to go to store today and the temperature gauge went to hot then to cold . i wonder could it be my alternator?
