Why is the gears slipping?

car don't want to shift correctly. Also I will be driving down the road and with it in drive position out of nowhere it shifts to neutral but still in drive position. I'll stop try to put in reverse then drive but it don't move. If you shut off car then start again it will change gears. But within minutes of driving again it will do it all over again
