Why does my power stearing not work?

Hi, I'm one of the auto experts on RepairPal's Car Genius team! Great question! Loss of power steering is definitely something you'll want to get sorted out quickly. On your 2010 Dodge Journey the power steering system is hydraulic, so the most common causes of power steering failure include low or leaking power steering fluid, a failing power steering pump, or a problem with the steering rack itself. A broken or worn power steering belt is also worth checking. If the belt that drives the pump has snapped or slipped off you would lose power steering immediately. I’d recommend checking the power steering fluid level first as it's the quickest and easiest thing to verify, however if the fluid is low there is likely a leak somewhere that needs to be found and repaired. Since driving without power steering can be unsafe especially at lower speeds and during parking maneuvers we'd recommend having a qualified shop diagnose and repair this soon.
