Both of those codes are **misfire** codes!!!!!!!!!....Possible : coil pack...spark plug wires...spark plugs...fuel injectors...vacuum leak...compression! ALL can be tested to confirm!... Suggest hands-on testing by a qualified mechanic OR a auto repair savvy buddy!... Professional scanner sure would be VERY helpful....live data can be viewed by mechanic while vehicle is driven under 'problematic' conditions!
There are a few items that can cause this symptom aside from the EGR valve. It is possible that there are restricted EGR passage ways and/or an ECU (computer) issue displaying the incorrected codes and failing causing the driveability issue. It is also possible the EGR valves that you are buying, are defective. It does happen. Either way, I would recommend taking the vehicle in to a qualified repair shop to have it properly diagnosed to determine the source.
Those are not misfire codes. P0404 is an EGR position sensor performance code and the p0406 EGR position sensor high. The vehicle needs to diagnosed to see where the issue lies.
You are correct... And I agree!...Thinking 300 series codes!! Still think the scanner showing live data will be VERY helpful.. As part of that diagnosis. I see you are in the same state.. May this is a job for your shop... Don't know how far the drive would be. But the key is as stated a good diagnostic check is a must!
