I BOUGHT MY CHARGER IN 2006 BRAND NEW. NO PROBLEMS UNTIL NOW, JAN. 2010. I WAS DRIVING FINE AND THE CAR ACTED LIKE IT GOT STUCK IN NEUTRAL. BUT IT WAS IN DRIVE. AND IT WOULD NOT GO FASTER THAN 30MPH, EVEN WHEN I STEPPED ON IT HARD. I MADE IT HOME, IT WAS WITHIN 2 MILES OF MY HOUSE. AFTER IT COOLED OFF I DROVE IT AGAIN AND IT WAS OKAY. BUT IT'S AT THE DEALERSHIP NOW. AND THEY THINK IT'S A SENSOR IN THE TRANSMISSION. THE DIAG. MACHINE DIDN'T PICK UP ANYTHING. I KNOW SOMETHING IS NOT RIGHT WITH IT. IT SEEMED LIKE THE TRANSMISSION FLUID WAS OUT OR LOW. YOU CAN'T CHECK IT YOURSELF, CUZ THERE IS NO TRANS. STICK IN THE TUBE THING WHERE THE TRANSMISSION FLUID GOES. I'M SO DISCUSTED. I LOVE MY CHARGER, BUT WHEN THE TRANSMISSION STARTS ACTING UP. IT'S TIME TO TRADE FOR A NEW CAR. SCARY. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT THIS COULD BE? HAS ANYONE HAD TROUBLE WITH THIS BEFORE. ALSO THE EMMISSION LIGHT CAME ON FOR A DAY. THEN IT WENT OUT. IT NEVER FLASHED JUST WAS ON FOR A DAY. WHEN IT WENT OUT, I THOUGHT THE CAR WAS FINE. AND THAT'S WHEN IT ACTED LIKE IT WAS STUCK IN ONE GEAR ALMOST NEUTRAL. PLEASE HELP.

Hello everyone! Had the same problem after my battery died. My car wouldn't go over 20 mph and I almost ended up paying over $100 just for diagnistics before doing research for myself and came upon this website. Debrina, Sorry to hear about the problem with your Charger, but it may not be as bad as you think. These transmissions have safeguards so that when the transmission control module detects a problem (faulty sensor) it will turn on the emission light, and it will go into a "limp home" mode. This limp home mode will act like like you describe, and it gives you just enough functionality to get off the road and "limp" home, and it helps protect the transmission from further damage. The shop should have connected a computer to the vehicle and checked the diagnostic trouble codes, and they should check all technical service bulletins from Dodge.
Thank soooooo much bretb for the info. The dealership put my car on the diagnostic machine and said nothing shows up as being bad. It's all clear. They are driving it to see if it does what I described. I'm still waiting on their response. Someone is suppose to call me around 1:00 today. I wonder if I will still have to pay for the full diagnosis check $125 bucks, if they still say they didn't find anything??? Lol. Thanks for your answer. I am going to contact the service dept. and tell them about the "limp" home thingy. I looked it up in my Charger book (I kept it with me) just interested in knowing a little about what kind of problems could occur and what to do. Anyway when I looked it up and read it, it sounds like it's exactly what the problem is. A faulty sensor. I hope that's all it is. Thanks again for your help!!!!!!!!
Debrina, Thank you for the appreciation, it means a lot! You will likely be charged the diagnosis time, even if they don't find anything, they simply cannot work for free, but they should have quite a lot of info to provide you if they spend the entire hour on the vehicle and this should be well documented on your repair order. They should have checked for codes in every computer on the vehicle, check for any software updates that may apply and check the technical info from Dodge. They should list all tests performed and the results of those tests, you are paying good money for good service, ask that they document everything. One more item, you said the emission light came on for a day, this should have stored a code in the engine control module, make sure they note this down. Good Luck, let me know what happens!
I got my car back after being at the dealership for 3 days. They could not find out what was wrong. The light did not come on and they didn't read any codes. I drove the car for about 2 weeks. Then the transmission didn't want to change into 2nd gear. No check engine lights or any lights came on. I had to drive between 35 - 40 mph. all the way home in traffic. It would not go any faster, even with the pedle all the way down on the floor. Since the dealership was closed, I called the next day and told them the problem again. They told me to bring it in after the weekend on Mond. I drove it to the dealership (approximatly 7 miles from my home) nothing happend. It drove like a dream. I left it at the dealers and they had it all day today and they said they put it on the diagnostic machine and could not not find anything wrong. They drove it, and the same thing. Now I'm really scared to drive it (but I have to have it to drive). But if it starts it again and I'm on the Interstate and a 18 wheeler comes up behind me going 85mph. or more and my car drops down to 35 to 40. Then I might end up 6ft. under. I just don't know what to do. I love the car, I just want them to fix the freaking thing. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Debrina
Debrina, These types of problems are very difficult to address, obviously for you the consumer, but for the Dealer and Chrysler too. With persistence, they should continue to dig until they can find the problem, assuming the problem continues to occur. It's important that they check all possible resources of information from Chrysler. I once had a similar issue on a Volvo, and it was found that there were 4 others in the US that had the same problem, and it took awhile, but they found that there was a software issue that was causing it. This is becoming common place, and it's often resolved by downloading some software into the car computer, much like we do for our home computers. Best of luck!

iwas wondering what happend if you got it fixed because my 06 magnum is having same problem when i hit 30 mph the esp bas light come on and check engine with codes p1128 p0032p0052 any help please

I had the very same issue with my 2006 dodge charger. It would not let me go pass 30mph and it would bog out. It went away for a few days, then it returned but this time it didn't go away. I thought it was a tranny issue because the code it put out was trans related. I took it to the dealer and they diagnosed the issue within 30 min. They told me that my emergency/parking brake lever had snatched/tore a cable that goes connected to the ecu and it went undone. I was also unable to use the autostick. They fixed the issue and since my warranty was up, I had to pay. I asked them how can something like this happen, ther service advisor response was, that someone must have messed with the wires but that was full of crap. They should be more carefull on the layout of the wiring when it comes to building these cars. Well the charger runs well and have not had that prob since then. I try to eleminate from using the parking brake as much.
we have the same problem bought brand new today my husband had the same thing hPPEN. IS TAKING TO DEALER TODAY. THANK gOD WE HAVE THE EXTENDED warranty will let u know what happens
Had the same problem and the dealership fixed it good as new. The said it was a problem with the speed sensor. So have them check that out specifically.
Boy,after reading the blogs, it sounds like the dealers give different answers for the same problem. I have an 06 Charger that did the exact same thing at about 30K miles. The problem never occurred again, but on occasion the transmission "shudders" turning my "engine light" on. It's occurring more frequently now and I have 68K on the car. The diag. codes are P0700 and P0730 for my car. Both transmission codes-Control Sys. Malfunction and Incorrect Gear Ratio. It was recommended that I get rid of the vehicle. The dealership is my next stop since it's under the power-train warranty. I just dread the line of BS that they'll feed me to avoid paying for it. I will see what they say. However, I will get rid of the vehicle before it breaks me or kills me!!!
Hi: The problem I had with my 2006 charger was fixed by the dealer back in Feb. 2010.Sorry I haven't responded back. The problem was the speed sensor. And believe it or not, it was under a recall issue. I never have luck this good, but this particular time, I didn't have to pay anything. I only have 36,080 miles on my car right now. But I have had the car since Jan. of 2006 (4 in a half years). And it was out of warranty. So the shutter, tranny like problem and only going 30mph with the pedel to the metal was the speed senor. It was fixed back in Feb. 2010 and I haven't had a problem since. Like I said before, I love my Dodge Charger, the room it has, the comfort, along with all the speed-----power, still looks new & cool. It's the best car I have ever owned. I just hope I don't have any more problems. Just oil changes and new tires every few years. I want to get it paid off. It will feel like I got a big raise.... Ha Ha. Best of luck with your Chargers.
Hi, was it your input speed sensor that goes repaired? I'm a bit surprised that the mechanics at the dealership couldn't diagnose the problem right away. Did you have that same issue again getting this repair for your car? I'm looking forward to your reply.
Yes, I know this is 3 years late. I just now saw it. Sorry. I'm sure you have gotten it fixed since then. I still have my charger and it hasn't had any problems since other than oil changes and tires. It's Aug. 14, 2018 and I have almost 80,200 miles on it. I live close to everything so I don't have far to drive. But it was the speed sensor. I have read different things for each car above. Luckily it was a recall.
May have been response caused by low transmission fluid.
Okay so i have been having problems with my 06 charger and all these comments seem to be about the same actions that my car is doing right now.Whenever i start up my car the abs and esp light turn on and when i try driving it doesnt go over 30 mph even with me stepping on it all the way.I found one of the fuses was burnt out which is #37 Transmission NAG1 , so i replaced it and everything went good for like two days and again the same problem this has been happening on and off for like a month and a half idk what to do any help ???
I bought a 2005 Hyundai Sonata. It work great till 3 months of driving it back and forth to work. my car also wouldn't want to go over 30 miles. It freaked me out. Waiting on my service dep. to see what is going on. Everyone is saying its the transmission going out. And if it is. I don't have the money. Love the car and its family safe.
Ihave just over 60K on my 2006 Charger and it is doing the same thing. I will be taking it in to the dealer tomorrow armed with the knowledge provided here. I hope it is the speed sensor and I hope it is under recall as well. I never got a recall notice - wonder why?
I never got a recall notice either, back when my charger was doing this. It just so happened the dealer covered it and said it was under the recall notice. So, good luck and I hope you get yours covered. The Dealer does charge alot (to me) for repairs/maintenance/service department. My husband had some work done on his Ram 1500 and it was almost $500 bucks to change out some sensor thingy that took less than 30 minutes. But it does work now. His truck was barely over 36k. when this happened. That's usually the way it happens.
We bought a 2007 with a 5.7 L Hemi R/T. Last summer 2011 I was using manual and when I shifted from 3 to 4 the same thing happened, all of the sudden I was cruising at 30 more or less and could not accelerate or shift gears I could just switch to Drive. So I just threw on my warnings and slowly put on the brakes. That seemed to help, and it jumped back into gear and I could accelerate again. When I called the dealership, guy said that sometimes it may happen that the cruising speed you're at when you try to shift could cause it to "skip", and so the car has a default cruise that it jumps to, to avoid damaging the transmission. It happened again a couple weeks later with my husband. Dealership couldn't find the problem. However a couple weeks later again, it got stuck in park. Would not budge, would not shift into drive, nothing. Got it towed and turned out it was part of a recall for a faulty gear shift cable that had snapped and had to be replaced. This was also related to the speed application thingy somehow that they also updated. Sorry for my terminology. Everything seems to have been going well, but 8 months later, the other day I was in Drive going up a hill about 35 mph, and the same dang thing happened, it got stuck at that cruise speed. I didnt want to brake going up that hill for fear I'd not be able to make it over without getting hit from the dude tailgating me. Threw on the warnings again and just barely made it to the top. Was able to brake on the way down and it jumped into gear again. Scary stuff. But I love that car. Dont know what to do.
What was the problem because the same thing is going on with my car now after that battery died
