A/C-Heater not defogging windshield. Dial is stuck.

When I turn the dial to try to defog the windshield it gets stuck and doesn't work. Even when I fore the dial to the defogging option the heater still doesn't work and the dial then slowly moves back to original position. Will this problem be fixed if I purchase a new dial from pick your parts or does it seem more like an internal problem? I would like to see if I can fix it myself before taking it into a shop.
