what would cause my 2008 dodge avenger SE not to shift into any gear (reverse ,neutral, drive) other than park?

I go to grocery store come out load my car up , I get in turn it on then I proceed take it out of park into drive, I give it little gas only to realize my car still won't move.. I'm assuming I must not of shifted to drive ,I must be in neutral .. so I then shift it into park, this time I'm watching staring as I take it out of park into drive still nothing..so again i place in park looking at my dash that shows what gear your shifted out of( park , neutral, reverse, drive etc) and it's not showing I have shifted out of park into , drive ..I had no signs of transmission going out it's like the shifter is not catching the engine / transmission ? only thing I've had noticed was the change oil light This is just all of sudden I done been out to diff. stores shopping & then my last stop before home ..
