Never had this problem before the key would not turn, in the ignition had the car towed in to service dept. and they drove it into a bay then told me I needed a new starter, I don't think one has anything to do with the other or am I wrong

if the key would not turn from the lock position, then it would be very difficult to tow let alone get it into a shop. if the service department drove it into the shop, then they did not have an issue except for the starter motor. go to the shop and talk to them and explain what happened to you and show them what happened when you trie to start it. it may be just the key worn out or lube needed in the lock cylinder. as far as the starter, it is a separate issue. You are probably not wrong. The ignition key lock cylinder has probably jambed internally and has to be replaced. This is quite common as the lock cylinder and/or key wears out. the lock cylinder cost about $90.00 and about 1 hours labor time is needed to recode the cylinder to your key and replace it.
Key should turn without starter, battery or motor. Assuming original key I've known this to happen to women mostly many times where wheels are turned into curb or something on a grade most of the time. I've had to take both hands to turn wheel more toward curb releasing pressure on locking pin in steering column so key will turn.
