I have a "pinging" noise in the engine. The "check engine" light is on. Valves?

What is your question?

Could it be valves? It is coming from the area of the manifold. Would some type of gas or oil additive help? Once in a while it will stop for a time and then starts up again. I have 117,000 miles on the car.
