missing top wire on ac. where and what is this wire for?

clutch on ac is not engaging seen a prong on top of ac compressor with no wire hooked to it. where is this wire? and what is its purpose? (clutch)

If the prong is a single electrical connector at the clutch, then it's the power connection to the clutch. If it's on the compressor, it's either a pressure switch or a thermal limiter switch, either is designed to protect the compressor.
