Bought code scanner and get code P0455. It just passed smog so assume its not gas cap. Have changed fuel filter, also plugs, fuel pump relay, battery. It has died at speeds up to 40 miles per hour. A few times it has died and then started back up on its own (without turning key in ignition) before it came to a complete stop. Sometimes it can be started right back up, and other times it is several hours before it will start back up. Had mechanic come out and look at it and of course it would not die. He cleared code and said we need to get a smoke test, and he didn't have one of those diagnostic tools. Changing gas cap and hoping this cures the problem and can avoid this expensive test.

This sound more like a transmission problem. I had a Plymouth Voyager do this same thing and it was the torque converter selonoid. I would start the van, run it for a few minuits, and it would "kick-down" in safe mode and not shift out of 2nd gear until you shut it off, and let it sit for a while. then it would start and run for a while, and do the same thing. Take it to a Trans shop, most will run a scan for free it they think you will have them work on it.
Had similar problem. Replaced sensor in the antitheft deterrent system and haven't had a problem since.
Mine has an after market alarm only. Was yours after market or factory?
But the code is for the Evap system. It shifts fine. Well gas cap didnt fix the problem, it died in the parking lot today and would not restart. Boyfriend tried using starting fluid spray and that wouldnt make it fire up. Could fuel pump cause this and perhaps the code is something totally different, in addition to the fuel pump?
