What is your question?
The problem just started ,while in park or neutral the engine will not go over 3700 rpm . it floats between 3500 and 3700 rpm. The check engine light came on and my code reader did not detect any trouble codes, it did indicate engine over heat, the temp gauge did not indicate on overheat.?? 90000, miles I am the 3rd owner.
What makes this problem better or worse?
cold or warm no difference
How long has your 2008 Chrysler PT Cruiser had this problem?
just started

My first guess is you may have an exhaust restriction. When power is limited along with engine speed, it is usually because the engine cannot breathe properly. Either too little air intake for the fuel or too little exhaust flow. All a guess, and testing is required. You will want to check for fuel trims and a few other areas of the data list, along with any diagnostic trouble codes. If your check engine light came on, there are codes -- so perhaps a better diagnostic tool is needed.
It unusual for engine rpms to be limited with transmission in park or neutral. In any event *hands-on* testing by qualified personnel is going to be required to address the reduced engine performance.
(It’s not unusual)
