My car turns over very well but why won't it start?

2wks ago my car just died while driving. I tried to start again and it almost did. Sounded like it was out of gas but I had 1/2 tank. My son checked relay and it wasn't that then checked fuel pump and said that was the problem so I replaced it. The fuel pump is in the tank. We did use most of the gas after draining in another vehicle but put back about 1/8 of tank to work with. Now it still is not getting fuel somewhere and makes kind of a coughing noise when trying to start. Since replacing fuel pump it has started as long as you keep accelerating motor. As soon as you take foot off the accelerator it would die. Now it won't even do that. ANY suggestions on what it could be now?
What makes this problem better or worse?
Seems to do better if let start on it's own without pumping gas but still won't start but tried better
