the back door hatch will not remain in raised position

Hello, it sounds like the "lifts" - which look like little shock absorbers - that hold up the hatch may be weak or have failed. Fortunately, these are available pretty readily at most reliable parts stores, or your local dealership. Changing them can be challenging - as the door will have to be supported in the open position to do so. And that door is heavy! So be careful. Or, enlist the help of a shop near you. The labor costs won't be so bad as it's not a terribly difficult job ultimately, with the right tools and experience. Naturally, my guidance is merely an educated guess, and certainly hands on inspection of the mechanisms would be in order.
