May have damaged the cylinder head when the engine overheated. the overflow could be sign of combustion pressure entering cooling system and high pressures escape on overflow tubes because radiator caps/overflow caps only holds up a certain amount of pressure for the cooling system, and anything over pushes the cap to release in overflow tube.
Agree with first answer,also suggest a combustion leak test to confirm (IF) any internal engine damage. Most any repair shop should be able to do this .
