Last week I started the car and I had no forward or reverse, everything was neutral.

Since then I have tried it a several times and it now works fine. I suspect that something is going out, but hasn't gone yet, like a link, solenoid or sensor of some kind.

I would have the vehicle looked at by a trained tech, sounds like hopefully an external transmission mode switch issue or something like that.

Yes, it does sound like an intermittent transmission shift solenoid or transmission sensor of some sort that is failing. Would highly recommend if the symptom continues to get the vehicle into a ASE Cert./AAA repair shop. We would be happy to help out or find a shop near you that has those credentails.
