I can not get the vehicle to engage into gear. It also has been shifting in and out of 4 wheel drive.

The car will not engage into gear(s) it also has been shifting in and out of 4 wheel drive. It has made shifting noises when the car has just shut off, and on one occasion made a grinding sound while driving and 4 wheel drive alerts have cone on.

What makes this problem better or worse?

Shutting the car off and allowing time to reset.
