The check engine light was on in our 2007 Chrysler Aspen 5.7L and we took it to the dealer as our regular mechanic said he didn't have the equipment to do a 'smoke test' on a PCM code 'P0440' which is a general emisions failure. The dealer charged $105 to do smoke test, which seemed the norm, as Car-X wanted $98, and said repairs would be on TOP of that charge, which resulted in $225 in labor, $9.45 for a part and $20.25 for CO2? The total bill was $268.77 to replace what was called a vaccum assist pump. Did i get the runaround? Words of tech are as follows: customer states check engine light on P0440 starscan test-failed-has locking fuel cap-appears to be sealing at this time-test W EELD-found smoke at EISM vent-replace EISM-retest-now passes-test 3 adl times pass always-reset PCM

sounds right. the labor is high but you expect this with a dealer. Roy
Around $100.00 to test the system is in the ball park. Typically repairs and repair labor are above and beyond that. Beware of places that offer free testing or waive diagnostic fees if you repair it, they are usually rolled into the repair price. After all, nobody is going to work for free. I am confused as to what the $20.00 for CO2 is ?? Overall, $270.00 for a check engine light repair sounds reasonable.
Well, i would say the CO2 was the compressed gas they used to push the smoke thru the system, but $20 worth?? A fill on my 20 oz. paintball tank of CO2 is only $3 so how big a tank did they use? The only problem i have with the lobor being so high is the guy called at 3:45 to say what was wrong and had it fixed by 4:45, so the actual repair seemed a little pricey! And the part, which i need to know what it is and what it looks like so i can see for myself how hard it is to fix. I am putting in my own plugs, of which there are 16, and i bet that will save me a bunch, so if i knew what was wrong, i would have done the same with the emissions vac pump!!! I ONLY go to mechanic when i don't have tools to do the job!!!
