Can not get the car out of park. What's wrong

This is called the "pink thingy" disease. A small piece of pink plastic breaks in the shifter mechanism and prevents shifter movement to any gear. Up until a few years ago, the complete shifter ($300+)was the only repair method. Now the piece is available separately ($15).
