Can heat/outside temprature have an effect on a car battery?

As in drag racing when cars temperatures get really high they have problems starting. In a battery excessive heat causes corrosion and in turn hard starting = shortening life span of the battery. I forgot to add it can also be an intermittent problem with the main relay, starter, or fuel pump.
