My car broke down and the mechanic says it's the timing chain--There is no timing belt on my car--just 2 timing chains. The guy is at a Tire Kingdom (closest car repair to me)and is ASE qualified. He charges $99 an hour and said it will take 9.2 hours according to the "book." He will have to order a timing belt kit---worst case scenario is $1400-1500. Is this reasonable or should I go to a dealership or other place? Just paid $323 for repair to the same store to replace a Serpentine belt, idler pulley belt, and alternator fan belt just 2 weeks ago and now this happens. Ugh. Any connection to it all or just an old car?

There's no apparent connection between the repairs and it's and old car for a Tracker. Love Trackers, myself but they don't last forever. Timing chain repairs are expensive (don't neglect to replace the guides), and need to be done by an expert. Sorry, but I don't know why you'd take any serious mechanical repair to a tire shop, I really recommend you go to a Suzuki specialist (the car is made by Suzuki) or a foreign car specialist instead. Here's a directory link for you but it's really only for Chevy: http://repairpal.com/chevrolet-repair-in-jacksonville-florida
I have a 2001 Chevy tracker V6 my car was already been fix by some other problem when my mechanic found out that my timing was about in shread,s from beating aganist my motor. He call his auto part,s people ,they told him they couldn't get one so i call a parts house here in my home town they wanted $484.00 For a timing chain kit with a water pump, i went on line with Ebay and got one for a $180.84 my mechanic will put it on for $300.00 i trust him he has been my mechanic for7 years and hasn't let me down or lied to me,So i tell you to shop around it doesn't take that long to put a timing chain on and if its a 4cyl it takes lest time .my mechanic charges $75.00 an hour & he is charging me $300.00 u do the math. And be sure to pray about it first. you go on ebay and order the chain your self.check back in a few days and i will ask my mechanic how long it takes.
I had ano 03, and had the timing chain go. I was told that it'd be about the same in labor you were quoted and low of $1.5k to $2.5k to fix. Been seeing my mechanic for 5 yrs and he told me it wasn't worth the effort to put that kind of money into it. So I went and found a newer 04.
