Random dead battery over the last few weeks. Now gauges stopped working.

This could be a slow or even intermittent electrical draw that could cause the symptoms you described. Check all grounding points and ensure they are clean and making good contact. A problem with the instrument cluster could cause the gauges to stop working. Sometimes, a bad ground will kill the power to the instrument cluster.
