Does the center post in the bottom of the oil filter housing have a spring in the middle of it

Change oil in a 2013 chevy sonic. Found a spring in the center of the post that the oil filter goes over. Also pulled out some broken plastic parts from the center of the same post. I need to know if that spring belongs in the post because it does not appear to do anything of value Any diagram I have found on the internet does not appear to have a spring in that part.
