What is your question?
Changed steering column shift mechanism and now we can move the gear selector but it is hard. It runs. Also just shifting through the gears we get the selection of P R N D 3 2 but not 1. Everything points to shifter cables. Could there be anything else that could cause my problem?
What makes this problem better or worse?
Not sure.
How long has your 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD had this problem?
Just happened Sunday

The linkage is in question. If you release the shift cable, does the shift lever move smoothly on the column? If yes, then focus on the cable routing or the physical transmission linkage. You did not indicate which engine or transmission you have, but that's basic information. It just needs physical inspection. You're on the right track, and unless there was some kind of physical damage or internal transmission mechanical mechanism failure (which would be unusual), then it must be something you could spot by a thorough inspection.
Neutral safety switch is binding inside.. It’s mounted directly to the transmission shift linkage - drivers side of transmission. It a common failure.
Reply for testing procedure.
Thanks going to try it
6.0 liter gas Automatic transmission
And also....the bushing on the lower cable that connects to the shift lever on the transmission is worn and came off....and I had someone shift through gears with that unhooked and it was the same difficulty.....I can hand shift the lever at the transmission and it was fine
