What causes headlights to dim when pressing the breaks?

A partially discharged / aging battery - OR - low alternator output voltage at idle can cause this. Possibly both condition exist. All that being said - it is not unusual to notice a 'slight dimming' of headlights when brakes are applied - especially when heater and other accessories are operating as well.
