4 wheel drive grinds when putting it in but doesn't engage

Service 4 wheel drive message is on and it won't engage 4 wheel drive and you can hear grinding noise

What makes this problem better or worse?

How long has your 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 had this problem?

Started about a year ago but would engage but now the grinding feels like the whole truck is shaking and won’t engage
