After replacing the left rear caliper and shoes the rim and rotor get very hot.

Remove wheel, try to turn that disc rotor, most likely will be hard to turn... Now: Remove caliper and see if rotor still hard to turn.. Possible park brake cable binding up, I'm sure you tried the park brake after the work!..Now; If caliper hard to remove and rotor turns free after it IS removed, suspect caliper/brake hose issue!
