2001 gmc 1500 what is all wheel drive?

I just purchased this 01 gmc sierra 1500 and do not know the correct procedure for engaging the 4 wd ranges with the pushbutton setup. Do you stop,put it in neutral then select the range? I am going to put it up on jackstands and check it out but would like some info as regards the pushbutton setup. I have three older 2500's w/ floor shift levers.

What makes this problem better or worse?

I just bought it, does't have an owners manual
