My 2007 monte carlo ss within minutes overheated warning light engine hot ac off came on immediately pulled over water was leaking from underneath car badly.. help please

No sounds except fans blowing still after I turned off engine.. last week noticed it going over the line at an idle, on freeway it would go back down on guage.. it was a hot day.. then just today drove 2 miles, gauge started climbing, warning light came on ENGINE HOT AC OFF... pulled over immediately, got out of car water with coolant was pouring out from underneath car.. water reservoir was still full. Fans were still blowing...
What makes this problem better or worse?
It happen one time in idle but just barely overheating on the gauge
