Why is my car overheating?

My 2006 Monte Carlo 3.9 LTZ just started with the overheating/engine shut down message yesterday. I had to turn the heat on in my car to shut it off. I have also noticed the fan on my car will start running after I shut it off. Would this be a plugged radiator? If so, what can be done to unplug it?
