What’s cause of small gas leak/strong oder passenger side

11/20/2021 bought 2009 Chevy Malibu LT with all extras, 41000 miles at an estate sale.
Gas gage was close to E
Gas cap is on passenger side
Filled tank and got a strong gas smell. More noticeable on same side but all around and inside car
Found signs of small leak on ground under front of engine towards passenger side
Both lessen as amount of gas drops
Averaging 18/20 mpg in town
No warning/dash lights displayed
Haven’t heard any noises or sounds
No indicators beyond what I’ve given
What makes this problem better or worse?
Worse with full tank
