there are codes stored which have caused the check engine light to come on. if you want to do this yourself, there are some parts stores that offer free scanning of check engine lights in the hopes that you'll buy your parts there. if you're not car savvy, suggest asking around to friends/neighbors what shop is most reputable and get them to diagnose it for you.
