Gauge problems are fairly common on some late model GM vehicles including your 2005 Chevrolet Malibu. Chances are the gauges cluster will need to be removed and sent to a specialty shop for repair. In some cases the warranty has been extended so it maybe worth while to check with your local GM dealer to see if the repair will be covered under warranty.
