Hello, As for the actual proceedure, just be slow and methodical, and only remove what is needed. After working on vehicles for many years, I have never had to replace one. You may want to just cut losses, purchase the rod new from GM (they are not expensive), and have them install it. The cost should not be unreasonable, and the repair should be quick. Best of all, you know it is done right, and you can read instead of laying in the trunk of your car.
