My gas gage is not working and either shows full or empty - my check engine light is on as well. I have been told its the fuel pump sensor, the whole fuel pump needs to be replaced, its a fuel level sensor and several other things - can you please help me narrow down the problem?

In most cases the fuel level sensor can be replaced separately from the fuel pump module. Try checking with your local GM dealer to see if a fuel level sensor is available for your 2005 Chevrolet Malibu. One thing to consider is that the fuel tank must be removed to replace the level sensor, some would consider it a good time to replace the complete fuel pump module assembly.
