What is wrong with my car, it died while driving and hasn't started back up

I have a 2000 Chevrolet Malibu 4 cylinder. I was driving down the road when it just shut off. I was told it was the fuel pump. That it had just went out, I had it replaced and yet the car still wont start. It cranks and makes a noise like it wants to start, but it doesn't. The timing belt is fairly new put on about 8 months ago. I'm out of ideas and suggestions?
