Usually the result of failing universal joint - dry u-joint cap bearings - u-joint replacement will be required.. Disassembly required for confirmation.. It’s a pretty unique sound - trained ear of experienced mechanic during test drive will be invaluable.
Keep in mind there probably isn’t going to be any noticeable play in the u-joint - the lubrication has been depleted - in which h case u-joint replacement will be necessary.
IF shifting into 4 wheel drive eliminates this noise - that is also a good indicator the rear driveshaft universal joint IS the culprit. Selecting 4x4 partially relieves rear drive-shaft load .. Noise goes away.
