what would make a 2015 not start even though lights came on/

I have a 2015 chevy impala I have had no problems with. car has 56,000 miles on it. this morning when I got up to go to work my car would not start. The lights came on in the car the head lights and tail lights where on. I waited a few minutes then I got back in car and tried to crank the car. The car started up. I put the key in not all the way and the car crunk up. I have had no problems with the car. I was able to drive the car what would be the problem??????
