Loud exhaust!!

Hi, I'm one of the auto experts on RepairPal's Car Genius team! Your instincts are pretty good. It definitely could be more than just a gasket. On any car, including your friend’s 2010 HHR, if the exhaust is louder than normal it could be several things. There could be a gasket issue as, or loose connections between one or more of the sub-components of the exhaust, or even parts of the exhaust that have rusted through. Any exhaust that can escape before the muffler can cause the exhaust to be really loud. Broken exhaust hangers can also cause quite the racket.
